The Garden on the Hill

What was once an overgrown and largely unusable property was completely transformed into a large, open backyard designed around family life.

The goal was to create a landscape with room for kids and dogs to run, while still incorporating lush gardens, productive growing spaces and the structure needed to make a challenging sloped property work.

Transforming the site required substantial excavation. More than 150 yards of material were removed from the property as the existing grades were reshaped and the backyard opened up. With the property situated on a hill, drainage and grade management were an important part of the construction from the beginning.

Curved retaining walls were constructed to work with the natural shape of the property and create usable areas throughout the landscape. Artificial turf provides a large, durable lawn with plenty of open space for everyday family use, while lush garden beds soften the retaining walls and bring colour and texture into the yard.

Growing food was also an important part of the project. Five raised garden boxes and a greenhouse create a dedicated vegetable growing area where fresh produce can be grown at home. A garden fence separates this part of the property from the main yard, protecting the gardens while still allowing the rest of the backyard to remain open for the dogs and kids.

Coastal Shores also installed the complete irrigation and drainage systems throughout the property. The irrigation supports the extensive planting and vegetable gardens, while the drainage system was designed around the site’s significant grade changes and hillside conditions.

The result is a dramatically different property. An overgrown hillside that offered very little usable space has become a large, functional backyard with open lawn, lush gardens and dedicated areas for growing food.

For us, this project is a great example of how thoughtful excavation, retaining, drainage and landscape construction can completely change the way a difficult property can be used.
