DRAINAGE & SITE EXCAVATION FOR LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION IN TSAWWASSEN, LADNER, WHITE ROCK & SOUTH SURREY
Coastal Shores Landscape Construction takes a construction-first approach to outdoor spaces. Excavation, grading, drainage and base preparation are planned as part of the overall landscape construction process, not as separate afterthoughts. Where drainage is required, we coordinate grades, catch basins, channel drains, piping and water movement with the finished layout to support patios, retaining walls, turf and other outdoor living features.
Every project is planned around the property itself, including soil conditions, slope, existing hardscape and how the finished outdoor space needs to perform.
WHEN DRAINAGE MATTERS IN LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION
- Water pooling that affects a new patio, walkway, driveway or lawn
- Soggy areas or low spots that need to be addressed during site preparation
- Water movement around retaining walls, raised patios and other landscape structures
- Roof runoff that needs to be coordinated with the finished landscape
- Existing drainage or elevations that affect a new landscape construction project
- Grading and drainage requirements beneath new paving, turf and outdoor living areas
COMMON EXCAVATION & GRADE ISSUES WE SOLVE
- Incorrect elevations that affect drainage and the performance of the finished landscape
- Shallow or uneven excavation under patios, walls and turf systems
- Organic soil, unsuitable fill or buried debris beneath finished materials
- Tight access, slopes and grade changes that were not planned as one site
- Existing concrete, failed base or unsuitable material that needs to be removed before rebuilding
- Site preparation being addressed too late in a landscape construction project
DRAINAGE, EXCAVATION & SITE PREPARATION
Below-grade preparation is an important part of a properly built landscape. We coordinate excavation, grading and drainage with the hardscape, turf, retaining walls and other finished elements being built above.
Integrated Drainage for Landscape Construction
- Site review for low spots, roof runoff, slope and drainage requirements affecting the project
- Catch basins, channel drains, lawn drains and underground piping where required
- Downspout tie-ins and water routing where they form part of the landscape construction
- Subsurface drainage beneath patios, turf and retaining walls where required
- Grading that supports drainage and the finished landscape
- Drainage planning integrated into larger hardscape and outdoor living projects
Excavation, Grading & Site Preparation
- Excavation to the required depths for paving, walls, turf and drain lines
- Rough and finish grading to establish usable elevations
- Removal of existing hardscape, failed base and unsuitable soil where required
- Base preparation and compaction for long-term surface performance
- Coordinated trenching for drainage and other landscape infrastructure
- Organized residential site work with access and neighbouring properties in mind
WHY DRAINAGE + EXCAVATION SHOULD BE PLANNED TOGETHER
In landscape construction, drainage, excavation and grading should be planned together before finished materials are installed. We plan them together.
That helps ensure:
- Correct elevations are established before drain inlets and pipes are installed
- Trenches, basins, and outlets are positioned for the finished layout
- Less rework is required after paving, turf or walls are already installed
- Site disturbance can be reduced by coordinating below-grade work at the same stage
- The base beneath finished materials has proper drainage support
- Future landscape and hardscape work can be considered before the site is closed back up
This is especially important on properties with sandy or fast-draining soils in parts of Tsawwassen, low-lying or drainage-sensitive lots in Ladner, larger sites in South Surrey and sloped properties in White Rock.
The work below grade should be resolved before the finished landscape goes on top.

Drainage Planned With the Entire Project
Grades, drainage, and finished construction are considered together instead of adding drainage after problems appear.
Site Preparation Before Finished Surfaces
Excavation, grading and below-grade work are addressed before patios, walls, turf and other finished elements are installed.
Hardscape Preparation
Where paving and retaining walls are involved, preparation follows CMHA-recommended hardscape practices for excavation, base preparation, compaction and drainage.
Coastal BC Conditions
Rainfall, grade, soil conditions and water movement are considered when planning the site.
